Lotus Shoe

This late 19th century Cantonese-style lotus shoe was considered the height of fashion. An adult woman also wore it. Once considered a show of sophistication, the feet of young girls were broken and deformed into the shape of a lotus flower. “Lotus feet” were viewed as a sign of beauty and status. Wood heel, with blue, purple and pink silk, floral appliqué and multi-colored embroidery. 3.75 inches in length. Collected by Claude and Marie Rupel, 1936-40. ULV-JAEGR-2014-5931
